Adult Speech Therapy Services
Our Mission
At Speaking Life Speech Therapy & Wellness, our mission is to “Speak Life” to our clients and their families by supporting the WHOLE person. We do this by utilizing a holistic approach of addressing wellness and communication skills through comprehensive coaching and direct speech therapy services. We meet the needs of individuals with communication, orofacial, and feeding/swallowing difficulties and their families.
Speech Therapy Addresses More Than Just Speech!
Often times, people assume speech therapy only has to do with speaking. While functional communication is a core piece of speech therapy, it encompasses so much more than just speech. We address difficulties in swallowing, memory, functional safety, orofacial, cognition, and more as well!
Swallowing
Speech therapy for swallowing is beneficial for individuals with various conditions that can impact swallow function, including stroke, neurological disorders, head and neck cancer, and aging-related changes. The goal of therapy is to improve our client’s ability to eat and drink safely and comfortably, enhance nutrition and hydration, and reduce the risk of complications associated with dysphagia, such as aspiration pneumonia.
Individuals with dysphagia will be taught compensatory strategies to improve their ability to eat and swallow safely. These strategies may include changes in head position, breath control, or specific techniques to reduce the risk of aspiration and choking.
Memory/Cognition
Speech therapy for memory or cognitive deficits is often beneficial for individuals with conditions that affect memory, such as traumatic brain injury, stroke, neurodegenerative diseases (e.g., Alzheimer’s disease), and other cognitive impairments. The therapy is individualized to the specific needs and abilities of each person, with the goal of improving overall communication, functional safety, and quality of life.
Speech therapy often involves task-specific training, where clients practice memory-intensive activities related to their daily lives. This could include recalling and following directions, remembering appointments, or retaining information from conversations.
Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy
The goal of orofacial myofunctional therapy is to address and correct abnormal patterns of muscle activity that may contribute to various oral and facial issues. This therapy is often recommended for individuals with conditions such as tongue tie (ankyloglossia), speech disorders, orthodontic problems, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, disordered sleep, and other issues related to orofacial muscle dysfunction.
OMT techniques focus on teaching proper oral and facial postures at rest, during speech, and while swallowing as well as reestablishing nasal breathing.
