How to use essential oils

You’ve purchased, or been gifted essential oils- you’ve heard about their amazing benefits, but now what? How do you actually use them? Using essential oils can be a wonderful way to enjoy their aromas and experience their therapeutic benefits.

Here are some common ways to use essential oils:

  • Aromatherapy:
    • Diffusion: One of the most popular ways to use essential oils is through a diffuser. Add a few drops of your chosen essential oil to the water in the diffuser, and it will disperse the aroma into the air. This can help create a calming, invigorating, or relaxing atmosphere in your home or workspace.

My favorites to diffuse: OnGuard, Lavender,

  • Topical Application:
    • Dilution: Most essential oils are highly concentrated and can be irritating to the skin when used undiluted. To apply essential oils topically, you should dilute them with a carrier oil, such as coconut oil, jojoba oil, or almond oil. The typical dilution ratio is 2-3 drops of essential oil per teaspoon of carrier oil..
  • Inhalation:
    • Steam Inhalation: Boil water and add a few drops of essential oil to create a steam. Lean over the bowl (be careful not to get too close to the hot water), cover your head with a towel, and inhale the steam. This can help with congestion and respiratory issues.
    • Direct Inhalation: Inhale the aroma of an essential oil directly from the bottle. This can be a quick way to experience the scent.
  • Baths:
    • Add a few drops of essential oil to your bathwater for a relaxing and aromatic bath. Ensure you mix the oil with a dispersing agent like Epsom salt to help it distribute evenly in the water.
  • Skincare:
    • Some essential oils are used in skincare routines. They can be added to lotions, creams, or serums for added benefits. For example, lavender oil is often used for its skin-soothing properties.
    • Some of the best oils for skincare are: Frankincense, Lavender, Tea Tree, and Rose.
  • Household Cleaning:
    • Some essential oils, like tea tree oil, lemon oil, and eucalyptus oil, have natural antibacterial and antifungal properties. You can use them to make DIY cleaning products to add a pleasant scent and enhance cleaning efficiency.
